Empowering Creativity on a Team
Anyone who is in the pursuit of a successful business will tell you that there are three things that are vastly important to achieving this goal: Hard work, business sense, and creativity. Oftentimes, creativity is left out of the mix, much to the detriment of the entrepreneur.
Being creative is what will save you and your employees when curve balls come flying your way. The market is so saturated with hopeful business owners similar to yourself, it is important to make yourself stand out from the crowd.
The CEO can not be the only creative problem solver on the team. They have to surround themselves with similarly creative people who each bring their own perspectives in order to really thrive. As a leader, there are things you can do to foster creativity in your office or business.
Create a Stimulating Work Environment
The first step in this process is ensuring that the work environment is stimulating and conducive to the creative process. This goes for any type of employee, even ones that are not usually considered “artsy.” Even your accountant could benefit from an office that stimulates creativity. The office of the future utilizes space for more than just secluding cubicles, but allows room for collaboration and team engagement. Windows, plants, and a well designed office space are a great start.
Here at JIFU, we understand how much hard work and dedication you put into your business, and that you want to make sure everything goes smoothly. However, try to avoid micromanaging your team. Hopefully, you have hired smart and capable people who you trust to do their job without you breathing down their necks. Your employees will feel empowered with your trust, and more free to explore ideas and solutions.
Include Employees at Every Level
Whether you have four employees or 40, it is imperative to include every staff member in your mission to empower creativity. Even the part time, hourly employee deserves to have their creativity nurtured. In turn, your company will benefit from a well rounded group of people at all levels.
Build a Diverse Team
Being sure to actively pursue diverse perspectives and team members will naturally lend itself to an imaginative and innovative workstyle. Someone with a different background than you will be able to offer ideas that would have never been considered otherwise. Diversity really does fosters innovation.
As with anything, incentive is a vastly important piece of the puzzle. When you reward creativity, your employees will begin to actively work towards achieving it. Eventually, this mindset will become a natural part of the culture in your company. Rewards can be as simple as verbal praise or as extravagant as a small raise for compounded exhibits of creativity.
Empowering creativity is more important than most entrepreneurs think. Out of the box thinking is what gets a company noticed and saves it from the mundanity of itself.
